The Hammer Artist Residency program gave the museum the opportunity to host Chinese artist Sun Xun from June to July of 2008 and to support the creation of a new site-specific installation and film. The work, titled New China (2008), explores Sun's interpretations of the ongoing relationship between the United States and China and the understandings and misunderstandings that relationship has spawned. This video features clips of Sun Xun's installation process and working method as he transformed the Hammer's Vault Gallery, and excerpts from a video interview in which he describes his inspiration for the piece.
