A Q&A with director Haile Gerima and UCLA history and African American studies professor Brenda Stevenson about Gerima's film Sankofa. In the film, a black fashion model is transported back in time to a plantation, where she witnesses and experiences the brutality of slavery. Through the ordeal, she learns the value of reclaiming one’s roots. Produced as part of the L.A. Rebellion film movement, the film examines gender, relationships between enslaved people, colorism, cultural conflicts, and religion. Sankofa expertly conveys the vantage point of the enslaved people, balancing the realistic portrayal of both oppression and resistance.
