Art history lecture: Van Gogh's stay in a mental hospital

Nov 04, 2019

During a year of voluntary confinement in a mental hospital, van Gogh painted some of his greatest and best-known pictures. He then returned north, to the Paris suburbs, to live and paint. But his attacks persisted, and he ended his own life at age 37. In this series of lectures at the Hammer, art historian, curator, and museum director John Walsh examines paintings by Vincent van Gogh on display in museums throughout Los Angeles. Considering them in artistic and historical context, Walsh illuminates how the works exemplify the artist’s struggles and achievements.
