Mark Bridges and Matt Tyrnauer discuss film Phantom Thread. Paul Thomas Anderson has taken us deep into the lives of singularly complex, creative characters before, but none with quite the panache of Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis). A 1950's-era, extremely British, couture dressmaker, Woodcock is a "confirmed bachelor" whose latest muse (an astonishing Vicki Krieps) is much more than just the beautiful waitress he first encounters. Laced (literally) with resplendent beauty and biting humor (most pointedly from Lesley Manville as his wise sister Cyril), Phantom Thread is bespoke cinema of the highest order.
The conversation was part of MoMA Contenders, The Museum of Modern Art's renowned series of influential, innovative films from the past 12 months. Whether bound for awards glory or cult classic status, each of these films is a contender for lasting historical significance.
