No Humans Involved: SANGREE

Dec 16, 2021

"We take different aspects of culture...and we make it ours," explain the artists of SANGREE (René Godínez-Pozas and Carlos Lara). Bridging the realms of the esoteric and the anthropological, the artist collaborative creates time capsules of out-of-place artifacts, or “OOPArts,” that challenge their own cultural context and origins.

Their series Abiogenators (2021) comprises ceramic vessels and carved columns that are made of canter rosa, a volcanic stone that was commonly used to build cathedrals and other architectural monuments during the colonial period in Mexico. Works from this series were installed at UCLA’s Hammer Museum in the exhibition No Humans Involved, October 10, 2021-January 9, 2022.
