Race, Identity & Alienation in the American Novel

May 18, 2021

Novelist and Some Favorite Writers host Mona Simpson joins author Danielle Evans and UCLA professor Adam Bradley, biographer of Ralph Ellison and author of the annotated edition of Ellison's Invisible Man.

Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man has continuing—even surging—relevance in the early 21st century. It anticipates the political moment of 2020 and 2021 in which we grappled with the tension between the founding principles of the United States and the failure to see them applied equitably to all citizens. This panel of authors, critics, and scholars dives into the ongoing resonances of Invisible Man as well as the importance of Ellison’s other writing, including his essays, writing for magazines and newspapers, and an unfinished second novel.
