The Supreme Court and abortion rights in 2020

Jul 09, 2020

In 2020, the Supreme Court just struck down a Louisiana law that would have restricted medical providers from performing abortions, thereby severely limiting patients' access to care. The case was the first abortion rights decision to go before the Supreme Court since the addition of two Trump-appointed justices, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh. Why, despite a more conservative court, did the ruling result in victory for abortion rights advocates? Why did Chief Justice John Roberts rule against the Louisiana law, when he had previously ruled to uphold a similar law in 2016? Moderator and Loyola Law School professor Jessica Levinson joins Dahlia Lithwick of Slate and Jacqueline Ayers of Planned Parenthood in this discussion around the past and future of abortion rights.
