On June 15, 2020 the US Supreme Court held that the 1964 Civil Rights Act protects gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender employees from workplace discrimination on account of their sexual orientation or gender identity. President Trump's first appointee to the Supreme Court, Justice Neil Gorsuch, authored the historic 6–3 ruling. So how does a conservative court come to an arguably liberal conclusion? Loyola Law School professor Jessica Levinson joins NYU law professor Melissa Murray to discuss that question and explain how the case came to the Supreme Court, the basis of the court's decision, and what this means for future cases involving LGBTQ rights specifically and all civil rights more broadly.
