John Fante is a quintessential Los Angeles writer who penned the beautifully desperate words in Ask the Dust: "Los Angeles, give me some of you! ...Los Angeles come to me the way I came to you, my feet over your streets, you pretty town I loved you so much, you sad flower in the sand, you pretty town." Los Angeles was his muse and inspired him to write some of the most influential prose about the American immigrant experience and the development of a young writer ever to reach print.
